Are you infested with carpenter
ants?
Carpenter ants prefer to live in dead,
damp wood. This is where this large (.25 to
1 inch) ant likes to build its nest. They don't
eat the wood, but they can hollow out
sections of trees or pieces of wood in your
home. This is the most common type of
ant found in United States homes. There
are over a thousand other species in the
genus Camponotus.
All ants in this genus, and also some
related genera, possess an obligate
bacterial endosymbiont called
Blochmannia. This bacterium has a small
genome and retains genes to
biosynthesize essential amino acids and
other nutrients. This suggests the
bacterium plays a role in ant nutrition.
Many Camponotus species are also
infected with Wolbachia, another
endosymbiont that is widespread across
insect groups.
Carpenter ants will cut "galleries" into
wood either inside or outside your home
to move from location to location within
the nest. Under windows, roof eaves,
decks, and porches are the most common
places to find these ants because they
have the most exposure to moisture.
Our expert exterminators will come to
your property, assess the problem and
offer you a solution.
